ADDITION Feb ’12 – due to a lack of response from @willrussell, I changed the handle to @willrussellmktg to move in line with the creation of Will Russell Marketing.
I have a problem – an inquiry, if you like, into the Twitter policy on inactive accounts. If you can shed any light, please do!
My problem goes like this…
When I created my Twitter account it was more of an experiment than a drive for self-branding. I was starting to develop an interest in the world of social media and wanted to learn more, so my choice of Twitter handle back then wasn’t really something of chief concern.
Now things are different.
For the last couple of months I have been trying, without any luck, to obtain the Twitter handle @willrussell. Currently I am @willrussell87 and – if I’m honest – those last two digits are starting to really irritate me. Not because someone has got the Twitter handle I’m after – fair play to them, they got there first. But because it is a totally, well and truly, unbelievably inactive account, yet I still cannot get my hands on it.
The user that created that handle obviously has no interest in Twitter – so the reasonable result should surely be the opportunity for others (ie – me) to start making use of it? Not so simple.
I’ve DM’d and tweeted @willrussell on multiple occasions to make the request. As you would expect via the above screenshot, I have not received any response.
He is following one other user. I tried to make contact, but it seems they are equally inactive.
He is listed in two Twitter lists. I contacted the owners of those two lists asking for assistance. Again, no luck.
I explored his followers for other options but, as you might expect, it’s all spam.
So I started emailing Twitter support. Their response has been the same each time:
“We’re currently unable to accommodate individual requests for inactive or suspended usernames. We may release all inactive and/or suspended usernames in the future, but have not yet set a date for doing so. Follow @support to be updated when inactive usernames become available.”
I did a bit more research, and it turns out that they have been in this limbo for quite a while – at least two years. My question is – what’s holding them back? Unlike other social platforms, no two users on Twitter can have the same username. With Twitter currently having in the realm of 300 million users, there needs to come a point whereby they remove the inactive accounts in order to make room for the acquisition of new users, surely?
Twitter defines inactivity as someone who has not tweeted in six months. @willrussell has tweeted only once, and that was forty-two months ago. Need I say more?
I am not asking for Twitter to simply shut down his account without notice. But why not have a policy whereby they send an email to a user after six months of inactivity, stating their account will be deleted if not used in the next 30 days? Skype have precisely this practice with Skype credit.
I understand why they would hesitate on removing inactive accounts, particularly in the early days. But now, I really feel they need to make a change.
If I am wrong about any of this, please let me know. Or if you have any ideas for next steps I might be able to take, I’m all ears!
God damn, I’ve got the exact same problem only mine has never, ever EVER tweeted and is followed by random bots and listed on some NASA fanlist.
Seriously Twitter, when it comes down to supporting your regular users, you suck bit time.
Rant on.
Ditto. No tweets, Nothing. Funeral services will be whenever Twitter decides to have them.
Agreed.
They should have a protocol in place whereas no activity generates an email with a 30 day limit. Send the email daily/weekly with countdown that account will be released or better yet allow folks to register on list that will allocate same to them at end of countdown.
You agree to these terms when signing up.
Here here. I would love to have my name on Twitter – it is sitting inactive and has been for 2 years
Im very angry at @twittersupport my old account which i have no access to was last used and
Logged into 2012 and i just came across it with my pictures on. Im very angry at why it hasnt been removed when its not been used since 2012. Utter laziness. I shall take this further twitter
I am having the same issue for over 4 years. f anyone is interested in joining me in litigation against twitter, please email me at triangle411@hotmail.com

I’m having the same problem with vine (which is associated with my Twitter account that I deleted A YEAR AGO) … I’ve been trying to get my vine account deleted for the longest and I’ve been inactive for nearly a year now…
Same here. I havent logged into my twitter account since 2010 yet it still sits up on twitter. I have no idea why this account has not been deleted yet. Very sad case.
Twitter, get a clue and do something to support those who are wanting to use your service actively rather than inactively!
Start a petition and see how that goes.

Just subscribed and shared it with my my twitter followers. Hope this will be fixed soon!
I last logged into my account in 2010. (Siz years ago). It’s still not deleted. I don’t care about the handle, I just don’t want my pictures and hometown showing up whenever someone searches my name.
I forgot the password, and the email I used was shut down years ago. Therefore support won’t do anything about it.
Six YEARS is a lot longer than six months.
Same problem here. It seems like 95% of the good usernames are taken by inactive or suspended accounts. That’s really annoying. I don’t get it why Twitter names that 6 months inactivity, if absolutely nothing happens to the accounts even after 10 years. My familyname is also used by an inactive user who never tweeted a single tweet but uses this name since 2009 – that are 8 years. What’s wrong with Twitter? Are they afraid to name the real number of Twitter user? I think everybody knows that there is a huge difference betweet user and ACTIVE user. Gosh, that’s so stupid of Twitter…
What sucks, Before twitter would completely get rid of, make non existent, an account after it was deactivated for 30 days. I was unable use same twitter name on new account. Okay so no one else was able use same name either. Now that accounts are completely gone after 30 days from deactivation I find other people using my old twitter names & I can’t. One such name that likely was original to me if I’m not mistaken was @BizRoundUp, Now I make up names that don’t matter to me if unable use or stolen.
I got the same problem. Had the account on for a small amount of time and it’s still up after 6+ of not logging in. I’m mad. I wish I could use my old name now without the extra ridiculous numbers and underscores. I too don’t have the information I put on my account. All of that has been gone. Changed phone numbers few times and haven’t used old emails since then. Much of it became spam so I shut it down. If I could I’d deactivate the old account myself I would gladly do it that is if I could remember the long ass password I used so no one can hack into it. Not. Smh.
Please Twitter get this going
